Q. How did you hear about the Laborers' Union Apprenticeship Program?
A. I heard about it through a friend who was hired on with the Shelly Company. And, when interviewing with "Shelly", Dave Gadosik mentioned that I go through the program with "them".
Q. Why did you join?
A. I wanted to excel and to learn a new trade. I was getting no where with the other jobs, I had worked.
Q. What variety of jobs have you done?
A. I mainly set-up and ran the traffic "work zone' for the Shelly Co. I also did some flagging and "partial repairs" which included joint work, asphalt crack sealing, guardrail and bridge approachments. At the yard i was in charge of tracking the trucks to the various jobsites.
Q. What area would you like to continue in / focus on?
A. I really like the traffic work zone, and would like to continue to excel there.
Q. What are some of the challenges you've faced?
A. Dealing with road traffic, and learning of the accidents and deaths related to the "zone" area, so that other deaths can be prevented.
Q. What are the advantages you've found?
A. The training classes have given me many tools to improve myself and better prepare myself for various jobs within the trade. Having the training will allow "call backs" sooner than most.
Q. What advice would you give to a "new" apprentice?
A. I would like to say "be open minded". Everyone can stand to learn something. There is always something you DON'T know.
